Playscript Programmes and Book-Signing/Play-Reading Events
Mind The Gap Theatre is committed to playwrights and the plays they produce. We are also committed to the idea that new drama is every bit as important to contemporary literature as poetry, fiction or essays. For that reason,we will work to provide professionally published editions for each new play produced at Mind The Gap Theatre in Playscript Programme editions.
Following a publishing model current in the UK, free Playbills would be replaced by inexpensive theatre programmes which also serve as commercially available copies of the play under production. The text of the play is prefaced by information about the Theatre, as well as biographies of all the people involved in the production. There is also often a short introductory essay from the playwright and/or another writer familiar with their work.
While these play might cost $10 at the bookstore, ticket holders would be able to purchase the books/programme for about $4. It's a bargain, intended to encourage theatre audiences to develop the rewarding habit of reading, as well as seeing, contemporary drama. Every good home library in New York should have a bookshelf full of contemporary drama, and MTG and is here to help.
A few days before new plays go on at MTG, look out for our playwrights signing copies at local NYC bookshops with members of our Rep along side of them reading scenes from the new work. We think these book-signing/play-reading events are a great way to get people to know our theatre, important new British dramatic writing, and the pleasure of buying and reading new plays.
Play-Script Programmes are regularly published by Nick Hern Books, Oberon Books, and Faber and Faber. Please look at their websites or request a catalogue to see the substantial amounts of new British drama they publish regularly in this format.
